Round Grand Final
The Kingston Crows
A grade team participated in a classic Grand Final battle with arch
rivals Slab Road at Lightwood Park on Saturday. Before a huge crowd
of spectators of both teams a fantastic battle occurred that was
played in the total spirit of the game of cricket. For that both
sides must be congratulated and on the day there can only be one
winner. Unfortunately for us Slab Road emerged as premiers.
The Crows won the
toss and lost Marc Owen in the first over. When Brett Stevenson was
dismissed soon after we were in real trouble at 2/13. Jamie Knott 56
and Dan Elliott 43 then rescued the innings and we looked well
placed at 2/100 after 30 overs. In our normal game plan that is the
position we strive for and hope to add 120 or more in the final 20
overs. Unfortunately we lost 3 quick wickets and could not kick
start our innings and were subsequently dismissed for 185 in the 49th
over. Jason Wicks made 26 while Slab Road’s Damien Clark took 7/37
in an outstanding spell of fast bowling.
The “Roadies”
openers look in little trouble as they took the score to 42 before
Nick Townsend was brought on to bowl. Two wickets, both caught
behind, in his first over and then another identical dismissal with
the first ball of his second over saw the Crows right back in the
game as Slab were 3/44. Justin Jarrett played a typical innings but
his dismissal and another soon after had the game delicately poised
at 5/98. A partnership between Brad Watson and Aron Cherry looked to
be heading their team to victory until Watson was run out with the
score on 133. Cherry went with the score on 145 and then another
wicket saw the score 8/156 and the Crows right on top. David
Griffiths and Damien Clark remained cool under pressure and with
excellent running between the wickets saw their team over the line
off the last ball of the 49th over. Townsend finished
with figures of 3/27 and Daniel Elliott took 2/21.
Damien
Clark was
the obvious winner of the Player of the Match award.
Congratulations to
Slab Road on back to back titles.
On Sunday we held
our Best and Fairest Awards with the winners being Malcolm Scriber
in C Grade, Jason Jones in B Grade and Daniel Elliott in A Grade.
Dan topped off his excellent season with bat and ball by winning his
3rd consecutive award.
Thanks to everyone
who helped out around the Club on the weekend. Carol and her team
did another outstanding job.
