6/3/11- Preliminary Finals

The playing season of the Kingston Crows Cricket Club ended on Saturday when both A Grade and B1 lost their respective Preliminary Finals. This means that for the first time in many years the Crows don't have a single team playing in the Grand Final and is a far cry from last season when we had four teams competing on the big day.

In A Grade, played on our home ground, Slab Road won the toss and elected to bat first. Scott Sward picked up two wickets in his second over to put us right on top and with Andrew Henley bowling dot ball after dot ball at the other end we restricted them to 3/35 off their first twenty overs. They took until the 37th over to reach the 100 mark but doubled that total in the remaining 13 overs. They finished on 8/202, a good final's score but with a superb and quick outfield the target was very gettable if partnerships could be formed. Robert Chapman took 2/27, Sward finished with 2/30 and Jack Philp 2/34. Andrew Henley only conceded two scoring shots off his bowling as he finished with the amazing figures of 10 overs 8 maidens 1 wicket for 3 runs.

Dan Elliott 21 and Hamish Jamieson quickly took the score past 30 but once the partnership was broken wickets continued to fall with regular pattern as we strived to get a partnership going. Only Jarrod Collis, in his first A Grade game of the year, was able to put up resistance as he scored 62 with 7 4s and 2 6s. While he remained at the wicket we had a chance but he was one of the last three wickets to fall with our total on 149.

A very disappointing way to end the season.

In B1 at Longley Crows captain Jason Jones won the toss and elected to bat under clear skies. The Crows got off to a solid start before losing their first wicket, that of Treptow.  James  Murray would then go on to form many partnerships, without any of the other top four going on to get that big score that was required to form a match winning total. Promoted B2 captain Gareth Percey joined James in a valuable 4th wicket partnership, that was looking favorable for the Crows. However as things were looking good, Gareth was dismissed for 34. James continued to bat through for an excellent 91 with 5 sixes. His dismissal would trigger a steady flow of wickets. Jones was left 22no at the end of the innings as the Crows compiled 209.

The Crows were then able to snare a couple of early wickets in Longley's innings and when they had them 4/109 they were very much in the game however they would still need a regular flow of wickets in order to clinch victory.  Unfortunately too many extra’s would hurt our chances with 29 wides being an indication of an indifferent bowling performance. Jono Cashion with 2 wickets would be the only multiple wicket taker as we would eventually go down by 4 wickets.

To reach a preliminary final from where they were 5 weeks ago is an excellent effort, but like all grades a more committed effort from players will see better on field results in the future.

The club will be holding their Best & Fairest counts at the Clubrooms this Saturday night. Details regarding the format of the night will be finalised early in the week and will be forwarded by email or on Face book. This and the Annual Dinner are the only formalities from the 2010/11 playing season. Invitations to the Dinner have been sent out. Please advise the relevant people of where or not you are attending.

Condolences to former player Brent Conway and his family on the passing of his mother.
